Dr Joe Boot, the Director of Christian Concern’s Wilberforce Academy, is a pastor in Toronto and the founder of the Ezra Institute for Contemporary Christianity. He writes from his context in Canada on the values and freedoms that were held and fought for by soldiers in the first and second world wars and asks if our populations would still make the same sacrifices today.

Nowadays, Christmas can seem very disconnected from its roots. The humble beginnings of our Saviour Jesus Christ can all too easily get lost in the manic present-buying, stress-cooking and last-minute-wrapping that we’re all too familiar with. The message is so easily forgotten; but it is one that brings life, joy and freedom, and it’s one that we’re told to share with the world.

On 19 July 2018, the Joint Committee of Human Rights, appointed by the House of Lords and House of Commons, issued a report entitled Enforcing human rights. This week, the story of Izzy Montague has hit the news, who challenged her child’s primary school over forcing children as young as five to take part in an event celebrating gay pride. Since making a complaint about the school’s handling of the event, Izzy says she has been victimised by the school.
Last week Channel 4 broadcast a documentary called “Trans Kids: It’s Time to Talk.” It is a compassionate but critical exploration of how we should treat children who are suffering with gender dysphoria. The presenter interviews several trans people about their experiences and comments on her own experiences of childhood. She is very concerned about offering irreversible treatment to kids who may change their minds. Tim Dieppe discusses what she found.
The issues of ‘gay pride’ and the LGBT ‘agenda’ have featured a lot in the news recently, whether through ITV ‘exposés’ on ‘conversion therapy’, the silencing of an ex-gay X Factor contestant, or news of parents fighting against schools promoting LGBT. But all of these stories have created a mixed response from Christians; confusion still reigns around how Christians should respond to ‘gay rights’ and ‘gay pride’.
David T.C. Davies began a debate in parliament about gender self-identification–the first time parliament has debated this. Mr Davies mentioned Christian Legal Centre client, Joshua Sutcliffe, a maths teacher disciplined for ‘misgendering’ a pupil, as an example of organisations operating ahead of the law. Tim Dieppe, Christian Concern’s Head of Public Policy, highlights the key points and argues the laws of nature will always trump the laws of parliament when it comes to gender identity.
