Unmarried couples who live together for just two years will be automatically entitled to half their partner's estate if they die without a will, under proposals from the Government's law advisers.

The Law Commission is about to re-open one of the most contentious areas of debate in British law. It will propose that the inheritance rule which now applies to married couples ? that the surviving spouse automatically inherits the estate of the deceased even if there is no will ? should also cover couples who have lived together for at least five years. And in the case of couples who have resided together for two years, there would be an automatic right to inherit half the estate.
