In the context of assisted reproduction, we decided that the reference in the 1990 Act to ?the need for a father? should be removed, whilst a more general duty to consider the welfare of the child should remain. This issue was debated in the House of Commons on 20 May and decided on the basis of a free vote. Two amendments on the ?need for a father? were both defeated at this stage by a clear majority.
