  • Tinder, as a place where men notoriously auto-swipe to increase their chances and bombard women with messages that are far from tasteful, has a reputation for embodying the worst of heteronormativity. But the company is making a major change that will make it a far safer and more inclusive space.

This morning, Tinder announced it’s adding 37 new genders, and giving users the opportunity to customize their gender, in order to make the dating app more inclusive for those who identify as trans or gender non-conforming. The new options vary greatly and include genders like androgynous, gender fluid, pangender, non-binary, transgender person, trans man and trans woman.

  • Is it really true that Jesus had no opinion about homosexual practice? Can we be sure that the children of same sex couples suffer no disadvantages from their parents’ lifestyles and ideologies? Is ‘transgender’ mainly about individuals who need compassion, or an altering of reality for all of us? Should Christians spend time analyzing and countering the effects of the sexual revolution, or does this detract from ‘Gospel ministry? These were some of the questions being asked at “The New Normal”, a conference organized by Christian Concern which took place at the Emmanuel Centre, London on 11/12 November.

Tinder has previously come under fire for discriminating against transgender and bisexual people for only offering the option to identify as male or female seeking a male or female.

  • Many councils are not using faith-based organisations to provide vital services because they fear the cash will be used to evangelise, it's claimed.

  • This week is Transgender Awareness Week. According to the organization’s website, Transgender Awareness Week is "a time for transgender people and their allies to take action and bring attention to the community by educating the public and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that transgender people face."

How should Christians react to initiatives like this? How should Christians respond to a culture that seems increasingly at odds with what the Bible says? Should we be fearful? Indignant? Apathetic? In this extract from Transgender, author Vaughan Roberts presents a different view in answer to the question, "How do we respond to our culture?"

  • Faith is a "force for good" and parents should not be afraid of raising their children as Christian, Britain's Secretary of State for Communities said last night.

Sajid Javid, who acknowledges a Muslim heritage but doesn't practise any faith, said: "Faith is undoubtedly a force for good."

Faith inspires people into public service and to help people in need, he said, and referred to a recent report that showed parents of all faiths, particularly Christians, were afraid to pass on their faith to their children in case it alienated them. "That does worry me, because religion can be an important factor in a child's upbringing," he added.
