  • The Archbishop of Canterbury has said the Government has "no grip" on what it is to be religious and "can't see really the difference" between Muslim extremist groups and those from the conservative evangelical wing of the Church of England.

    He added that both groups were assumed to be "a bit bonkers".

  • Pupils with behaviour problems are too often "offloaded" into illegal schools, the chief inspector of schools says.

    Sir Michael Wilshaw said mainstream schools in England must take more care of pupils sent to unregistered "alternative" establishments.

    Ofsted inspectors investigated 162 suspected illegal schools last year.

  • High Court judgment reveals that school staff felt bullied by Ofsted at a meeting attended by chief inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw.

    School staff felt “bullied” after attending a meeting with Ofsted and chief inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw, according to details contained in an interim High Court judgment.

    It also suggests that Ofsted inspectors who failed the state funded Islamic school went with a “pre-determined” agenda.

  • The High Court in London will decide on Tuesday if a school in England has the right to block a critical inspection report.

    In the first case of its kind, the school has argued that Ofsted's findings were unfair.

    The school's submission to the court says publication risks causing unnecessary harm to the school and local community.

    For legal reasons, the BBC cannot name the school or even where it is located.

    Senior inspectors visited the faith-based school and compiled a highly critical report last summer.

  • A Christian couple have been blocked from adopting their two foster children after expressing concerns about them being raised by a gay couple, the Telegraph reports.

    The married couple, who have not been named and have looked after the children since earlier this year, admitted that when told that a gay couple may adopt the youngsters they "expressed a degree of shock and asked if this was a 'joke'."

    The practising Christians, who have biological children, were said by their social worker to find the situation "very challenging", and two days later formally applied to adopt the foster children themselves.

  • You’d never think the country’s short of foster parents, would you, though we’re 9,000-odd short at the last count. I wouldn’t qualify myself, even if I were solvent. Because if you open your trap in the presence of a social worker to say that a child is best off with a father and a mother, viz, probably the view of most actual parents, you can kiss goodbye to your chances of looking after a child unless it’s one you have given birth to.

  • Delegations of Shia and Sunni Islam, the Roman Catholic Church and Anglican / Episcopal leaders are gathering in the Iranian capital Tehran for the fourth Christian-Muslim Summit of Religious Leaders. The interfaith dialogue brings together international leaders to reflect and share ideas around the theme of Respect for human dignity: the foundation for peace and security. “Given the rise of violence throughout the world by those who claim to be acting in the name of religion, this theme is particularly important,” a member of the Anglican delegation said.

  • Hull's Holy Trinity Church is to be given the status of Minster at a ceremony on 13 May next year, the Archbishop of York has announced.

    Two years ago, Dr John Sentamu revealed it would become Hull Minster if a £4.5m revamp of the church "was successful".

    The interior is being restored and remodelled for large events in time for Hull's City of Culture year in 2017.

  • A Christian charity is urging a greater awareness of religious persecution in India as the British Prime Minister arrives for a state visit to the country.

    Release International has been speaking as Theresa May made her first trade mission journey with companies from around the UK in an effort to "reboot an age-old relationship (with India) in this age of opportunity".
