David Cameron is backing down over his gay marriage plans. He's finally understood that his party views this issue as a matter of conscience, not a matter of course. But even though the penny's dropped about Tory hostility to these plans – and we're talking some senior Tory ministers, like Owen Paterson and Philip Hammond – I believe the PM and his inner circle still haven't grasped the enormity of their mistake in pushing a change in the marriage law.
