  • Parishioners have threatened to boycott a church that banned yoga from its premises because it is "non-Christian".

    Church bosses said the discipline that originated in ancient India "might be seen to be in conflict with Christian values and belief".

    Part of St David's Church, in Ceredigion, Wales, is being converted into a community centre after complaints that the village of Blaenporth lacked facilities.

  • The Archbishop of Canterbury says he will be praying for President Donald Trump to have the "determination and courage" to push for peace between Israel and the Palestinians during his upcoming trip to the region.

    Justin Welby said on Wednesday as he was wrapping up a 10-day Holy Land trip that his key takeaway from the visit is “the overwhelming need for peace.”

    The head of the Church of England says that "people have lots of views about President Trump but when he comes here, my prayer for him is that he will be filled with determination and courage and given gifts of wisdom that will make a difference."

  • Parents are campaigning to re-instate a popular teacher after he was sacked for gently tapping a pupil round the back of the head.

    Matthew Mountford, 38, had 12 years of exemplary service at the North Staffordshire school where he 'brushed' the head of a 13-year-old who was chatting in class.

    Staffordshire Police and the school initially agreed the 'glance' was to motivate the distracted child and felt the matter should be dealt with through internal disciplinary procedures.

  • Roughly a quarter century after the collapse of the Soviet Union, religion has reasserted itself as an important part of individual and national identity in many places where communist regimes once repressed religious worship and promoted atheism, according to a major new Pew Research Center survey of 18 countries in Central and Eastern Europe. In addition to religious identity, beliefs and practices, and national identity, the survey explores respondents’ views on social issues, democracy, the economy, religious and ethnic pluralism, and more.

  • A landmark project to map the wiring of the human brain from womb to birth has released thousands of images that will help scientists unravel how conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy and attention deficit disorders arise in the brain.

    The first tranche of images come from 40 newborn babies who were scanned in their sleep to produce stunning high-resolution pictures of early brain anatomy and the intricate neural wiring that ferries some of the earliest signals around the organ.

  • A NEW BILL that will make it illegal for retail outlets to sell a mobile phone with internet access to minors under the age of 14 is currently being drafted.

    Under the proposed Internet Access for Minors Bill 2017, it will also be illegal for parents to allow their children born after 2015 to own a portable device which has the internet.

  • Louise says she realised she may have been raped after reading a Newsbeat article on 'stealthing'.

    Stealthing is a term given to the act of removing a condom in the middle of sex, without asking your partner's permission.

    A recent report from the US suggests that cases are on the rise, and that it is a hugely under-reported issue.

    Twenty-two-year-old Louise (not her real name) has been telling Newsbeat it happened to her.

  • A renegade Anglican bishop has been appointed outside the Church of England’s control by a foreign Christian leader, in a significant first step towards a split in the church over the issue of homosexuality.

    Church of England officials were shocked to learn that in a secret ceremony last week, one of its priests was consecrated as an Anglican bishop in England by the leader of a hardline Anglican church in South Africa, in a direct challenge to the Church of England’s authority.

    The Rev Jonathan Pryke, 57, is a curate at a church in Newcastle with orthodox views on homosexuality, and is now also a bishop under the auspices of the conservative Reformed Evangelical Anglican Church of South Africa.

  • A Belfast woman has cleared the first stage in a legal bid to have her forthcoming humanist marriage to an international footballer legally recognised.

    Laura Lacole is due to wed Republic of Ireland midfielder Eunan O'Kane at a venue in Northern Ireland next month.

    She is challenging the General Register Office for refusing to officially authorise the ceremony.

    It is due to be conducted by a British Humanist Association celebrant.

  • The archbishop of Canterbury has said a "moment of opportunity" could be within reach in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after he met political leaders from both sides during a trip to the Holy Land.

    Justin Welby held separate talks with the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, in which both spoke positively about the possibility of reviving peace talks in the coming months. Abbas had just returned from meeting Donald Trump in Washington, and the US president is due to visit Jerusalem soon.
