Health Secretary to declare ‘gender-selective abortion is illegal’

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is to issue new guidelines for doctors declaring that sex-selective abortion is “unacceptable and illegal.”
 
It’s believed the new Government guidance will say doctors will be in breach of the law if they pre-sign abortion forms or perform abortions based on the gender of an unborn baby.

"It is a very helpful clarification from the government. As a matter of principle and practice gender selection is thoroughly outlawed by this government as well as pre-signing,” said Conservative MP David Burrowes.
 
He added: "Any evidence must lead to the full force of the law being applied. For too long professionals and others have been able to use the cover of ambiguity and have been able to allow gender selection to take place.”
