Two catholic midwives who sought an exemption, on the basis of conscience, from supervising staff who were involved in facilitating abortion, have lost their case at the UK's Supreme Court. An appeal court in Scotland had previously found in their favour. The case raises important issues about the extent of protection of conscience and may be submitted to the European Court of Human Rights.
