Pro-lifers violently attacked at Australian March for Babies

Printer-friendly version

The annual March for the Babies in Australia was marred by violence after a large group of pro-abortion activists attacked those attending the peaceful demonstration in Melbourne.

Assaulted

Pro-life Victoria Member of Parliament Bernie Finn said the he was “belted in the head”, whilst pro-life MP Andrew Elsbury was thrown to the ground and stamped on.

“What we saw today was literally a public mugging on the streets of Melbourne and Victoria Police let it happen,” Mr Finn said. “We had people being assaulted, being kicked, being stomped on and they sat back and watched.”

Bruised

American pro-life activist and founder of Profile Stand True Ministries, Bryan Kemper, said that he was left bruised and sore after being thrown to the ground and kicked repeatedly by the mob.

He explained that police officers at the scene had failed to intervene when violence broke out, and that the group of around 200 pro-abortion activists had attempted to block the march even before it had started.

“We all sat in protest and started praying,” Mr Kemper said. “Then the police let them start attacking us.”

“Stomped on”

“As we got to the stage the pro-aborts took over our stage and started stealing banners and signs, that is when I was knocked to the ground and kicked and stomped on.”

But the attack, which also involved instances of egg-pelting, did not deter the attendees.

“Eventually we got our stage back and finished, but many of our people were assaulted. But we never gave up and I gave my speech,” Mr Kemper said.

“The police were useless.”

Failure

Although nobody was seriously injured, concerns have been raised over the failure of Victoria State police to intervene on behalf of the pro-lifers who were attacked.

The annual March for the Babies marks the passing of the Abortion Law Reform Act in the state of Victoria in 2008, described by pro-lifers as “one of the most extreme abortion laws in the world.”
