‘Dr Death’ returns to UK
Dr Philip Nitschke, also known as ‘Dr Death’, is due to host a number of seminars on how to commit suicide in the UK this month.
Dr Nitschke, who is the founder and director of the euthanasia campaign group Exit International, will discuss different ways in which elderly and terminally ill people can take their own lives.
The four locations for the proposed tour are London, Eastbourne, Edinburgh and York.
Father Tim Jones, a vicar in York, commented: “I am disgusted to hear that Dr Philip Nitschke will be pressing his tawdry, seductive hopelessness here in York.
“The pro-euthanasia movement undermines the wonderful vision and work of the hospice movement and the principles of the medical profession who care for us.
“If our culture does embrace euthanasia then we will find the end of life care, especially for the poor, will be restricted to the low cost option of premature death.”
North Yorkshire police said: “If it transpires that a suspected criminal offence has been committed, people can be assured that the matter will be investigated.”
Dr Nitschke regularly travels to the UK and across the world to give talks on suicide techniques.
In response to one of his trips to the UK in March 2010, Baroness Finlay stated that people did not need to kill themselves to ‘die well’.
Andrea Williams, chief executive of Christian Concern, said:
“In the context of such a dismal economic climate, Dr Nitschke’s message is a great danger to vulnerable people who may feel pressured into taking their own lives.”
