Islamic state sentences pregnant Sudanese doctor to hang for being a Christian

Printer-friendly version

A pregnant Sudanese doctor has been sentenced to death by hanging after refusing to renounce her Christian faith.

Meriam Ibrahim Ishag, aged 26, was born to a Muslim father and married a Christian man in 2011.  She has been convicted of apostasy but told the Sudanese court, "I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy."

In the Islamic state a child must follow the father's religion.  Meriam is eight months pregnant and has an 18-month-old son.  Her sentence includes 100 lashes before she is to be hanged.

The British, United States, Canadian and Netherlands Embassies have issued a joint statement expressing "deep concern" about the case.

“It is abhorrent to contemplate the hanging and lashing of a pregnant woman simply because she chooses to follow Jesus. The spread of sharia law is a threat to freedom of religious belief and freedom of speech for all of us and we must resist it wherever it occurs,” says Andrea Williams of Christian Concern.
