Printer-friendly version

A record breaking Christian astronaut has shared how his faith allows him to see the "creative work by an infinite God."

NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander Jeffrey Williams is currently on his fourth space mission.

He will have spent a United States record of 534 days in space, when he returns to Earth on 6 September 2016, the third longest duration on the space station.

Purpose

Speaking to Christian leader Albert Mohler, Williams said: "You see the design. You see the beauty. You see the purpose. You see all of those elements. You see order in all of the details."

"That's what I see when I look out the window."

The comments were made to a Southern Baptist Theological Seminary chapel service, of which Dr Mohler is President, on Tuesday.

During his time in space, Williams, who is a keen social media user, has shared some of the images he has taken out of the windows of the International Space Station on Twitter and Facebook.

’Beyond our comprehension’

Describing the expansiveness of the universe and God's creation, Williams said that it is something that "is beyond our comprehension".

He said: "You look down at the planet and you see this marvelous, unique place we call Earth, uniquely designed, uniquely purposed, and a place that is provisioned and ordered to sustain life".

Lifelong journey

Williams also discussed his Christian faith and belief in God.

"I believe in Him as creator and redeemer through Jesus Christ," Williams said.

When asked by Dr Mohler whether he had a personal message to give to the chapel full of young people, gathered to train for Christian Ministry and Christian service, Williams had some words of wisdom to offer.

He encouraged Seminary members to: "deepen their understanding of their scriptures, to know what they believe, and to make that a lifelong journey, ultimately to know our saviour."

'The Work of His Hands: A View of God’s Creation from Space'

Williams has authored a book about his time in space titled: 'The Work of His Hands: A View of God’s Creation from Space'.
