The Church of England General Synod is set to debate a private members motion on whether the new Girlguiding promise, which removes references to 'God', is discriminatory against Christians.
The motion has been tabled by senior member of the Synod, Alison Ruoff, who says that the new secular oath is forcing leaders and members to choose between "faith and Girlguiding".
In a briefing paper distributed by Church House, Mrs Ruoff said: “The Scout movement have retained their ‘old’ promise, to love God, as well as having a secular promise. Why therefore should the Guiding movement not be allowed to have choice?
"It is rank discrimination against the girls of this wonderful youth movement.”
