An expert in the philosophy of religion has again highlighted the significance of religious freedom and expressed his concern at the failure in recent legislation to protect freedom of conscience in the UK. Speaking at an event in Belfast, Roger Trigg, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Warwick University, said:
"It is not surprising that totalitarian states attack religious freedom. Religious freedom is a pre-requisite for all democracy and it is terribly important. Once religious freedom is restricted all freedoms are under attack."
Prof Trigg, who sits on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's Advisory Group on Freedom of Religion or Belief, also said that "British values are fundamentally Christian values, the values brought to the British Isles 1,500 or more years ago. Common law is steeped in these values."
