Campaign launched for homosexual 'marriage'

Printer-friendly version

Homosexual campaigners have launched a bold campaign to overhaul Britain’s marriage laws in order to allow for homosexual marriage. Their actions are part of the “Equal Love” campaign, spearheaded by homosexual campaigner Peter Tatchell.

On 2 November 2010 eight couples, four homosexual and four heterosexual, started a concerted action to challenge the rules that currently prohibit homosexuals from entering into marriage and heterosexual couples from entering into a civil partnership.

The heterosexual couples went to their local registrars to ask for a civil partnership whilst the homosexual couples sought permission to “marry”. All eight couples expect to be turned down. Homosexual couple Sharon Ferguson and Franka Strietzel plan to take their case to the courts, claiming that the register office’s refusal was a breach of their human rights. The other couples involved in the campaign are expected to launch similar actions when their applications are refused.

Under current law, only heterosexual couples can marry, while civil partnerships are reserved for heterosexual couples only. Homosexual campaigners argue that this is contrary to the Human Rights Act, and in particular, violates Article 14 (Protection against Discrimination) and Article 12 (The right to Marry) and Article 8 (The Right to Respect and Private and Family Life).

The Government Equalities Office said that it was “considering the next steps” for civil partnerships.

Peter Tatchell recently celebrated 40 years since the formation of the Gay Liberation Front, a radical anti-family movement. The group’s 1971 manifesto stated: “We must aim at the abolition of the family”. The document urged activists to target law, education and the media as part of a cultural revolution to demolish the family.
