Rupert Everret receives death threats for views on same-sex parenting

Printer-friendly version

British actor Rupert Everret has admitted to receiving death threats after expressing his disapproval of same-sex parenting in a recent interview for the Sunday Times Magazine.

Mr Everret, who is openly homosexual, sparked outrage amongst campaigners after saying that he did not believe that children should be raised by same-sex couples.

The 53-year-old said that he agreed with his mother’s comments that "children need a father and a mother" and that he could not think of “anything worse” than being brought up by two dads.

"[Mum] thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her. I can't think of anything worse than being brought up by two…dads. That's just my opinion," he said.

He told the Daily Telegraph that he had received a number of critical messages and even death threats after making the remarks last month.

“I've now had all this hate mail and there have been death threats too…I'm having to take evasive action," he said.

Mr Everett previously said that he did not agree that same-sex couples should seek to adopt, commenting that he himself “could never do that to a child”.

He also criticised the use of surrogacy techniques to enable homosexual couples to have children, describing the practice as “egocentric and vain”.
