Asia Bibi, the Christian woman whose death sentence for blasphemy was upheld by a court in Pakistan last week, will appeal to the Supreme Court, her lawyer has said.
The Pakistan High Commissioner has told Release International he will do all in his power to protect the rights of Christians at risk in his country. He addressed a vigil outside the High Commission in London to present a 51,000-signature petition calling for equal treatment for Pakistan's minorities.
The House of Lords debated yesterday, 28 October 2009, Lord Lester's clause included in the Coroners and Justice Bill to abolish blasphemy in Northern Ireland. The amendment was withdrawn.
