Schools are to be issued with the first national guidelines on transgender pupils in March. The guidelines are being drafted by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (ECHR). Tim Dieppe comments on the implications of these guidelines.

The London Assembly has approved a motion calling for the ban of pro-life pavement counselling and prayer groups from outside abortion clinics. Labour Party Assembly Members Fiona Twycross and Dr Onkar Sahota called on the Mayor to look at existing powers to bar pro-life groups from approaching expectant mothers outside abortion centres.

Ofsted released their annual report this week, which made a point of criticising faith schools. Ofsted’s Chief Inspector, Amanda Spielman, also criticised faith schools in a speech at the launch of the report. Tim Dieppe points out that Christian schools are not to blame and Ofsted need to recognise that the worst examples they cite are from Islamic schools.
This past Monday, the Christian Legal Centre’s Roger Kiska presented a paper at the Human Rights, Law & Religion: Flashpoints symposium held by the Centre for Conflict, Rights & Justice at the University of Nottingham School of Law. He presented on the growing legal conflict between freedom of religion, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Carys Moseley reports that the Welsh Assembly has become the first legislature in the western world to ban an elected politician from speaking for criticising transgender identification. Gareth Bennett from UKIP criticised the UK government’s proposals to amend the Gender Recognition Act to make changing gender easier.
Lord Pearson of Rannoch has said that that he fears that telling other people about Christianity could soon become a hate crime. In an interview with Premier Radio, Lord Pearson said that free speech is being eroded by hate crime legislation. Read more.
