Freedom

Britain has a history of religious freedom and tolerance. UK and European law largely protects an individual’s right to hold and manifest religious beliefs at work, although this is fast being eroded. Due to badly-written equality legislation, increasing numbers of Christians have been penalised for their faith at work. Some have been threatened with disciplinary action, suspended and even sacked for refusing to act against their consciences. At Christian Concern we vigorously resist any restrictions on freedom of speech and expression for Christians at work.

    Two local councils in South East England have been told to stop holding prayers at the beginning of their council meetings. Mayfield parish council in East Sussex had voted to include prayers in their meetings but was then told by the Sussex Association of Local Councils that these were not appropriate for a public meeting and should be taken off the agenda.

    A Christian cafe owner in Blackpool has been told to stop displaying Bible verses on a TV screen in his café and threatened with arrest. Jamie Murray, the owner of Salt and Light cafe, was approached by police last Monday, 19thSeptember, after they had received a complaint that some of the verses were “homophobic” and “insulting.”

    A GMC Investigatory Committee has decided today (23 September) to continue to pursue the case against Dr Richard Scott, the Kent GP accused by a patient of sharing his faith in a one-to-one consultation, despite the witness not being at the hearing and showing an ‘unconditional disinclination to attend’.
