A global call to stop the use of the term ‘incompatible with life’ to describe unborn babies with life-limiting conditions will be made in Geneva this month by Irish pro-life group Every Life Counts, alongside medical experts and researchers in the field.
Every Life Counts is made up of families who have faced a life-limiting diagnosis for their unborn child and aims to provide valuable support for others facing similar situations. It also campaigns for the provision of perinatal hospice care and an end to discrimination against children in the womb with severe, life-limiting disabilities.
The group, alongside international medical experts and researchers in the field, will travel to Geneva for 11th March where they will make a global call to "discontinue the dehumanising term ‘incompatible with life’". It will also launch the Geneva Declaration which states: "As medical practitioners and researchers, we declare that the term 'incompatible with life' is not a medical diagnosis and should not be used when describing unborn children who may have a life-limiting condition."
It adds: “We fully support the development of perinatal hospice services for families who are told that their unborn child may not live for very long in the womb or after birth."
Organisers are hoping to make the launch an international event, and will be joined by families, medics and delegates across Europe and America.
