Next year, the UK National Screening Committee, an executive agency of the Department of Health, will consider whether a new blood test to diagnose Down's syndrome in unborn babies should be offered to pregnant women on the NHS.
The technique, known as Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), has been supported by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in a scientific impact paper published this week.

Last year, a parliamentary commission found that approximately 90 per cent of unborn babies who are diagnosed with Down’s syndrome in England and Wales are aborted after pre-natal testing.
