Many general elections bring a change in political direction. Last week’s has also delivered a radically different structure. The announcement of Britain’s first coalition government for 70 years continues the dramatic changes to our nation’s political and social landscape that we have witnessed over the past decade and is being heralded as a ‘new era’. This is unchartered territory in modern Britain. Unsurprisingly, some are emphasising the opportunities and others the challenges. CCFON is committed to viewing these changing times through the lens of God’s word and is ready to pioneer a ‘new era’ of Christian political engagement appropriate to the new context.
This week’s developments provide both opportunity and challenge. Partnership may provoke re-evaluation of long held beliefs and commitments and a readiness to consider previously rejected options. What matters is that these are tested against a reliable standard of truth and not driven by mere pragmatism or political expediency. The latter danger is very real, perhaps especially given the tendency of our age to emphasise packaging and presentation over policy conviction. In this evolving environment CCFON will continue to point to the stable and dependable wisdom of the living God.
In the LORD’s grace, CCFON will seek to work even harder and more effectively to ensure that the biblical vision for a peaceful and prosperous society is presented with clarity and compassion to a nation that desperately needs to hear of it. In particular, we will be looking to build on the remarkable support of Christians which we enjoy and so value, in order to equip further local churches to speak to the needs of our society in times of such change and to ensure that that voice is heard in Westminster and beyond. We look forward to working with those in Parliament, whether new members or returning, towards ensuring that Britain builds on the only foundation that can deliver stable and just government that is truly in the national interest and for the common good.
