You may find the following points helpful in framing your communication:
- The framework is highly misleading and even manipulative in its use of the word ‘homophobic’. It gives the impression that any opposition to homosexual activity is driven by phobia, widely understood to be ‘irrational fear’. It does not allow for any distinction to be made between opposition to particular sexual activity and hatred or ill-treatment of a person. It therefore pre-judges the argument about the legitimacy or otherwise of particular sexual activity and hinders rather than helps discussion of these important issues.
- The agenda therefore blatantly promotes and imposes a particular ideology despite the fact that there is not widespread consensus on that ideology.
- The framework represents a major departure from the views held by both Theresa May personally and her party more generally until relatively recently. Many people will be very surprised and saddened that this agenda is being pursued by a Conservative-led government.
- The agenda is very extensive in its scope covering schools, workplaces, family, civic society, public services and even sport and international affairs.
- The radical re-definition of marriage and family that has taken place in recent years and was pursued especially by the previous government stands in sharp contrast to the accepted patterns that prevailed for hundreds of years. The full effect of the changes that have already taken place will not be recognised for many years to come.
- The scope of the agenda and the speed with which the underlying ideology is intended to be imposed is therefore utterly inappropriate especially given the scale of the changes that have already taken place recently and that there has been insufficient time to digest them.
- Christians are of course opposed to bullying and torture in all its forms. However, the framework does not define what constitutes these things in this context. Will explaining that homosexual activity is morally wrong be construed as bullying?
- The section in the Equality Act that allows civil partnerships to be formed in religious premises could lead to church officials who refused to conduct such ceremonies being put under enormous pressure to do so.
- The plan alludes to research that is currently being carried out and to the publication of a fuller work-plan later in the year, but makes no mention of public consultation on these issues. What provision will the Government make for public consultation on such controversial, emotive and potentially divisive issues and the use of public money to promote this agenda (especially at a time of economic hardship)?
