A Christian Peacemaker Team worker who was abducted in Iraq and held captive for five years has written about the key lessons she learned about her faith as a result of her experiences.
Peggy Gish, who was kidnapped in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq in 2002, says that even in the most frightening of situations, which pushed her to the limits of her faith, she knew God was giving her "strength, wisdom, and love" for those around her.
She said: "For me, it has been a privilege that has made real Jesus’ call to embrace his way of nonviolent suffering love. It has made his words about loving enemies (so much that you are willing to live with them and even risk your life for them) come alive."
In her article, Peggy Smith sets out six crucial lessons she learned from her enforced detention which ended with her safe release in 2007.
