Offering asylum to Iraqi Christians threatened by Islamic State could unwittingly play into the hands of the jihadists themselves who are trying to “cleanse” the whole Middle East of non-Muslims.
Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, who gave the warning, says that if the only plan the West has “up its sleeve” is to fulfil the IS agenda, then it could spell the end of the ancient tradition of Christianity in Iraq and Syria.
Instead, he urges governments to establish international forces backed by the United Nations and “intensive negotiations” to end the civil war in Syria.
Bishop Nazir-Ali comments clash with the views of the Anglican leadership as the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop Of York and other leading clergy have continued to press the Prime Minister to admit refugees fleeing from Islamic persecution.
