A Sudanese woman who faces the death penalty for "apostasy" has given birth to a daughter in a Khartoum prison clinic.
In Sudan, where Sharia law operates, Muslim women are not allowed to marry non-Muslims. Meriam Ibrahim (27) was raised as a Christian after her Muslim father deserted the family. However, in Sudan, children must follow the faith of their father and a Court refused to recognise her marriage to a Christian, Daniel Wani.
Meriam was sentenced to death after she refused to renounce Christ. She remains shackled by her ankles in a cell with her first child, a 20 month-old boy. The authorities refused to take her to hospital to give birth and neither she nor her husband have been allowed to see the baby girl who was born on Tuesday.
It is believed that Meriam will be allowed to nurse her child for two years before she is hanged.
