A vigil has been held in Bradford in support of Nissar Hussain, the Christian convert from Islam who was attacked outside his home last month, in what police are treating as a religious hate crime.
Nissar, who converted from Islam in 1996, was attacked in November by two hooded men, who beat him with a pick-axe handle. He required surgery after suffering a broken hand and shattered kneecap and was hospitalised for several days.
The Hussain family has faced hostile and threatening behaviour for several years but this is the first time that police have recorded a religious hate crime The brutal attack was captured on CCTV.
‘Love and justice’
Around 60 people attended Saturday’s event, including Nissar’s wife and two of their children, according to organisers.
The vigil, which was open to those of any background or faith, featured songs and prayers for the Hussain family.
In an effort to demonstrate both solidarity with the Hussain family and love for the Muslim community, those at the vigil held placards carrying the words “Justice for the Hussains” alongside others reading “We love Muslims”.
Nissar, who was unable to attend the vigil owing to his injuries, said afterwards:
"My family and I are humbled by the response of the British public. We now know we are not alone and thank everyone for their support, prayers and campaigning. I am sorry I could not join the peace rally but I was there in spirit and pray that this small action might bring a change in our situation."
Protection for those leaving Islam
The British Pakistani Christian Association, which organised the vigil, has called on the Home Office to conduct an investigation into the persecution of Christians within minority communities in the UK, so that converts can be better protected.
Last year, Nissar and his family helped to launch Christian Concern’s Safe Haven initiative, which provides advice and practical help to those wanting to leave Islam but fearing the consequences.
