A fast food chain has been banned from donating meals to a high school fundraising event in California because of its support for marriage as the life-long union of one man and one woman.
A local Chick-fil-A restaurant had donated 200 meals to Ventura High School for a back-to-school fundraiser event. But the school’s principal, Val Wyatt, banned the donation saying: "With their political stance on gay rights and because the students of Ventura High School and their parents would be at the event, I didn’t want them on campus.”
In response, tthe owner of the local Chick-fil-A restaurant Robert Shaffer said: “We treat everyone who walks through our doors, regardless of their religion or sexual orientation, with honour, dignity and respect."
Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute said: “Taxpayer-funded public schools have no business going on a witch hunt against benevolent businesses simply because one of its managers was quoted as supporting natural marriage.”
In an interview published by the Baptist Press in 2012, the President of Chick-fil-A, Dan Cathy, outlined her views on marriage saying we “very much support the Biblical definition of the family unit.”
Following the comments, university students in North Carolina voted in favour of banning the company’s outlet from their campus.
The company, which is known for it’s Christian ethos, says it’s corporate purpose statement is: “To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.”
