Germany is set to become the first country in Europe to provide parents the option of a third ‘indeterminate’ gender on the birth certificates of their newborn children.
‘Blank’ gender
The option of ‘gender: blank’ is to be introduced in Germany in November this year. This is to enable children born with characteristics of both sexes to decide later in life if they wish to be known as male or female.
The new law also allows individuals to remain of indeterminate gender for their whole lives if they choose.
However, German authorities are yet to decide on how the new law will affect gender description on personal documents such as passports which still require gender recognition.
Australia became the first country in the world to legalise an indeterminate gender category just over six weeks ago.
