Theresa Davies

Theresa Davies, a registrar with Islington Borough Council, was demoted from her job because of her refusal to preside over civil partnership ceremonies. Ms Davies believes that the Council discriminated against her because she is a Christian. Her case did not proceed to an employment tribunal because her complaint had the same facts as those in a previous case involving registrar Lillian Ladele, who was threatened with dismissal when she refused to preside over civil partnership ceremonies. The Court of Appeal found that the Council was right to insist that Ms Ladele presided over civil partnership ceremonies despite her faith-based objections.
