  • The British government on Monday faced fresh calls to appoint an independent reviewer to assess the "effectiveness" of its controversial Prevent counter-terrorism strategy in universities amid concerns that it undermines free speech and is discriminatory against Muslims.

A suggested amendment to the Higher Education and Research Bill to be proposed in the House of Lords, the upper house of the British parliament, would require the government to appoint a reviewer "to conduct an independent review of the operation and effectiveness of the Prevent strategy in relevant higher education institutions".

  • You can listen to my Premier Radio interview on this bill here.

Today, Monday 13 March 2017, Diana Johnson’s radical Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations) Billwhich seeks to remove all legal restrictions on abortion, passed narrowly by 172 votes 142.

  • The Bishop of Chelmsford is calling for thanksgiving services and eucharists for gay couples amid controversy on how the Church should move forward.

  • The UK government’s latest defeats on key parts of the Higher Education and Research Bill in the House of Lords will herald a parliamentary "ping pong" period, in which peers may be "emboldened" to insist on their changes if they believe that enough MPs will support them.

Peers last week backed amendments – proposed jointly by Labour, Liberal Democrats and crossbenchers – that would stop the teaching excellence framework being used to set tuition fees and to rank universities.

  • In the great amphitheatre of Twitter a gladiatorial combat recently took place between the Blessed Archbishop Cranmer and the eminent Dean of Christ Church, The Very Rev'd Professor Martyn Percy.

More polite than the scratchy enmity that marked the struggle between Newman and Kingsley, and certainly much more condensed and immediate given the restrictions and opportunities of Twitter, it was no less important.

In salvos restricted to the 140 character maximum limit, two powerful and wholly antipathetic cultures clashed head on in the public space.

  • A Tory peer has accused colleagues in the Lords of allowing the “systematic killing” of disabled babies after his abortion rights Bill was thrown out.

Abortion is legal up to 24 weeks, but the Abortion Act 1967 extends the limit until birth if there is significant risk of the baby having serious disabilities. Lord Shinkwin, who has brittle bones and uses a stick, wants a 24-week limit.

  • Midwives have been accused of pushing for an abortion "free for all" as MPs prepare to vote on whether to decriminalise the procedure.

A Labour MP is to introduce a 10 minute rule bill in the Commons which would remove any criminal sanctions for doctors and women involved in MPs up to 24 weeks.

Under current laws, it is illegal for a woman to have a termination unless it is signed off by two doctors.
