Only 60 babies a year in need of adoption are being placed permanently with families, compared with four thousand in 1974. Overall, the number of adoptions has fallen by 8% since 2007. The average time between being taken into care and being adopted is two years and seven months - and there is now a record number of children in care. One of the main reasons for these dispiriting figures is that rising need is met by a system which is marked by risk aversion and marred by politically correctness. I described recently how government guidance issued over ten years ago to ireminded local authorities that seeking ethnic matches should not delay adoption has not been followed by many local councils.

Is religious freedom under threat in America today? Yes and no. Compared to Eritrea, where the government habitually forces Pentecostals into unventilated shipping containers until they renounce their beliefs, American religious freedom is in very good shape. But comparative evils abroad are a poor reason to be complacent about liberty at home. Today, in fact, multiple threats warrant special vigilance.

Father Immanuel Dabaghian, one of Baghdad’s last surviving priests, is expecting a quiet Christmas. To join him in the Church of the Virgin Mary means two hours of security checks and a body search at the door, and even then there’s no guarantee of survival. Islamist gunmen massacred 58 people in a nearby church last year, and fresh graffiti warns remaining worshippers that they could be next.
