As you can read on today's ConHome frontpage Nick Clegg is using a speech to attack Tory policy on marriage and family life. 10 Downing Street interpret the speech as an attempt by Nick Clegg to quell unrest within his party after last week's EU veto. David Cameron's advisers fear that one consequence of the EU issue will be that progress on other Coalition business - unrelated to Europe - is likely, at least for a time, to become more difficult.

The Prime Minister does God. At least, that's the gist of his first major speech on religion. Actually, the interesting thing is that a Tory Prime Minister feels that he has to make the point that he is a Christian. Other than Michael Howard, who was Jewish, most other Tory leaders could have assumed we’d take it as read that he or she was more or less CofE, including Mrs Thatcher, who was, of course, a Methodist.

The Senate should be commended for criminalizing same-sex marriage in Nigeria. Of a special note is the statement credited to the Senate President, David Mark, when he reportedly called the bluff-off some developed nations who are trying to meddle in our internal affairs on the account of their grants to Nigeria. According to our Distinguished Senator, if such countries are not comfortable with us on criminalizing same sex-marriage in Nigeria, and they want to tie their aid or grants to it, they may keep their grants. On this same occasion of the Germany Ambassador's visit, the Senate President further remarked that Nigeria as a nation should also be in a position to be giving out grants and not continue to be a receiver provided we have been able to manage our affairs properly, maybe tackling corruption more effectively and reducing wastages in the running of governments at the Federal, State and local levels.
