Bishop Nazir-Ali leads service of thanksgiving at Buckingham Palace as Christians celebrate Coronation

Christians met outside Buckingham Palace on 2 June as Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali led a service of thanksgiving in honour of Her Majesty The Queen on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of her Coronation. 

Children and young people from Christian group Youth With A Mission created a display on the steps of the Victoria Memorial including an 8ft scroll with the words "Beloved Queen." Eighteen of them wore T-shirts which spelled out "Let's Live the Oath!!"

The display was intended to express thankfulness for Her Majesty's service spanning several generations and her faithfulness to the Coronation Oath.

Christians from across the Commonwealth took part in the service which included prayers for Her Majesty and concluded with a rendition of God Save The Queen.

In his address to the crowd, Bishop Nazir-Ali expressed appreciation for The Queen on behalf of Christians and explained the biblical basis for the British monarchy. On the eve of the House of Lords' debate on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, the Bishop also expressed the hope that Her Majesty's Government would not put her in a compromising position with regard to keeping the Coronation Oath to "maintain the laws of God" and "the true profession of the Gospel."

It follows the reported comments today of former lord chancellor, Lord Mackay of Clashfern, who said: "The idea of the Coronation Oath was that it would never be in conflict with [the advice of her ministers]."
