China's one-child policy scrapped

Printer-friendly version

China is to end its controversial one-child policy. At least 336 million abortions have been attributed to the policy, introduced in 1979. Gender-abortion has also been practised and China currently has 116 men for every 100 women.

Couples will now be allowed two children. Many nations, including China, have ageing populations, while some, such as Portugal, have declining populations."Countries are beginning to wake-up to the demographic time-bomb," Andrea said.
