New Jersey Governor to challenge same-sex 'marriage' ruling

Printer-friendly version

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has vowed to appeal a ruling made by a Superior Court Judge which would allow same-sex marriage in the state.

Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobsen conceded to an emergency request by six homosexual couples, obligating state officials to start officiating same-sex marriages from 21st October.

The state has recognised civil unions since 2007.

But New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has since vowed to appeal the decision all the way to the Supreme Court.

He is currently seeking a stay which would delay the onset of same-sex marriages until he is able to get an appeal.

Gov. Christie believes that the issue of same-sex marriage should be decided by a public vote.

When asked by a voter at a campaign event why he opposes same-sex marriage, Gov. Christie said: “…Lots of different people have different views on this, I think marriage should be between a man and a woman.

“My view is: If you want to change it, put it on the ballot. Let everybody decide. It shouldn't be decided by courts… It should be decided by everybody”
