Amendments to the Health and Social Care Bill have been laid to ensure that women considering an abortion would be guaranteed access to independent advice prior to being referred to an abortion provider.
Dutch politician acquitted of “hate speech” charges after comments about Islam

Geert Wilders, leader of the right-wing Freedom Party, has been cleared of charges of discrimination and hate speech by a Dutch court after publicly expressing his disapproval of Islam. The politician was charged with five counts of incitement to hatred for his controversial statements about Islam, which he made between October 2006 and March 2008 in website articles, speeches and his 17-minute film “Fitna” (meaning “Discord” in Arabic).
Free morning after pills have “no impact” on teenage pregnancy rates

A new system implemented in Wales, whereby morning-after pills are distributed for free on request, has reportedly failed to reduce teenage pregnancy rates. Over 700 high street pharmacies in Wales can now provide the morning-after pill free of charge, even to girls as young as 13, without consent from a parent or guardian.
Catholic Care refused appeal

The Leeds based charity Catholic Care has lost its appeal against a ruling that they must offer their adoption services to homosexual couples. The dispute is a long-running one and centres on the issue of whether the charity can continue to operate in a way that is consistent with its religious beliefs, specifically as they relate to placing children with homosexual couples.
Equality Commission questions Christian ‘integration’

Trevor Phillips, the head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), has commented on religious discrimination in the UK. In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, Mr Phillips singled out evangelical Christians for criticism. He said: “I think the most likely victim of actual religious discrimination in British society is a Muslim but the person who is most likely to feel slighted because of their religion is an evangelical Christian.”
French National Assembly rejects homosexual marriage

The French lower legislative house, the National Assembly, has voted against a Bill that would have legalised homosexual marriage, voting 293 – 222 against the proposal on 14th June.

Following the screening of Terry Pratchett’s documentary, Choosing to Die, in which a British man travelled to the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland to take his own life, members of the House of Lords have joined the chorus of complaints to the BBC for showing the programme.

Care Not Killing, an alliance of over 40 organisations, has today called on the Secretary of State for Health and the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, to carry out an urgent investigation into the way assisted suicide is covered by the BBC and its link to English suicide rates.
BBC plan to screen an assisted suicide

At 9pm on BBC 2 on 13 June the BBC is planning to show the film ‘Choosing to Die’. The programme is being presented by Sir Terry Pratchett, a long time campaigner for assisted suicide. It will show Peter Smedley, a motor neurone disease sufferer, taking his own life on camera at a Dignitas clinic in Switzerland.

The latest BBC documentary glosses over the pain and moral difficulty of assisted suicide The BBC is gushing about its film Choosing to Die, which is to be shown tonight. The programme, presented by Sir Terry Pratchett, is called “incredibly moving” “piece of work, in which we see a person take his own life on camera, so desperate was he to affect the debate on assisted dying”.
