The government’s Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill was debated in the House of Commons on Tuesday and passed its second reading. This means that it now progresses to the Committee stage where amendments can be proposed, and where each line of the Bill is scrutinised. The Bill will enable one partner to impose divorce on the other for no reason at all.

This week, former magistrate Richard Page lost his appeal at the Employment Appeal Tribunal. The ruling could effectively bar Christians from holding positions in public office if they express a Christian view of marriage and family. The battle is not over for Richard; he “remains as faithful as ever to his beliefs and will bring his cases to the Court of Appeal.” Andrea Williams comments on the judgments.

In a new two-part series on freedom of speech in universities, Carys Moseley explains how students and academics have surrendered their freedom to debate to the acceptance of transgender ideology. In this first part, Carys comments on a letter to the Sunday Times signed by 30 academics, demanding that universities cut ties with LGBT charity Stonewall.
This year, the Government Equalities Office launched new research into “the effects of conversion therapy in the UK”, asking LGBT activist Adam Jowett from Coventry University to recruit people to interview. Following criticism over how he was conducting the research, Carys Moseley now comments on how this government study presents an “ethical, moral and legal dilemma.”

Sadly, he says, with eroding freedoms and emptying churches, “the heart and soul of the nation [has become] disease-ridden, on life-support and on the edge of extinction.” How will history look back on this generation?

The Department for Digital, Cultural, Media and Sport and the Home Office have launched a public consultation on the issue of online harms. The Online Harms White Paper sets out a comprehensive plan for what the government deems to be a “world leading package on online safety measures.” The deadline for submitting a consultation response is 1 July 2019.
