End of life

At Christian Concern we believe in life, not death. There is currently sustained pressure by a minority of vocal campaigners to weaken the law on assisted suicide and change public opinion on assisted suicide and euthanasia. This would be to the detriment of the whole of society, especially the disabled and terminally ill. People who are suffering at the end of their lives need to be shown compassion and given better palliative care. At Christian Concern we vigorously defend the law relating to euthanasia and assisted suicide to ensure that the vulnerable are protected.

    On 3 June, campaign group Care Not Killing, of which Christian Concern is a member, held a rally and mass lobby of Parliament in order to promote better palliative care and oppose the legalisation of assisted suicide and euthanasia.

    A new draft Bill recommending assisted suicide, and a consultation on the draft, have been launched this week by euthanasia lobby group ‘Dignity in Dying’ (formerly the Voluntary Euthanasia Society) with the assistance of Parliamentary group ‘Choice at the End of Life’.

    The British Medical Association has rejected a motion to change its position on assisted suicide from ‘opposed’ to ‘neutral’. In addition, the BMA has passed a motion calling for women who are considering an abortion to be provided with independent counselling.
