On March 14th Jacqueline McGinn lost her battle to save her frozen embryos from being destroyed. The High Court in Belfast ruled that the embryos had to be destroyed because Jacqueline's ex-husband had withdrawn his consent for the embryos, which were created as a result of IVF treatment, to be adopted following the couple's divorce. The court ruled that under the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990, the husband's decison to take away his consent took precedence. It was therefore unlawful to keep the embryos and they have since been destroyed. Jacqueline, who has a seven year old daughter, wanted to donate the embryos to an infertile couple.
