Germaine Greer: Motherhood has been deconstructed
Germaine Greer, a well-known feminist from Australia, has spoken out against IVF and the reduction of “the concept of motherhood” to a “genetic mother who supplies eggs”.
Greer also criticised Elton John and his ‘spouse’ David Furnish for listing Furnish as the ‘mum’ on the birth certificates of their two sons. Greer remarks: “I'm sorry. That will give you an idea of how the concept of motherhood has emptied out. It's gone. It's been deconstructed.”
John (68) and Furnish (52) used a California-based surrogate, together with an anonymous egg donor, to have their two boys, Elijah (2) and Zachary (4).
Greer went on to say that fertility specialists incentivise women to donate eggs by offering them IVF at a reduced cost. She comments on the price women still pay: “In some cases you are told what has happened to [your eggs], and in other cases you are not... Did we talk about this? Did we sit down and talk about what eggs mean to women?”
Andrea Williams, Chief Executive of Christian Concern, states: “Our culture has drifted further and further from God’s design for the nuclear family through divorce, cohabitation, and same-sex relationships. Now we see the tragic but unsurprising consequences, including the disintegration of meaningful familial relationships that God designed to nurture children, such as the role of the mother.”
