A homosexual couple from Surrey is anticipating the birth of three babies from three different surrogate mothers.
The men met one of the women, Becky Harris, 27, through an online surrogacy website. She was already pregnant with her third surrogate child for another couple so couldn’t assist them immediately but introduced them to her former sister in law, Bex Harris, 32, through whom they also met a third woman, Viktoria Ellis, 32.
Now all three women are pregnant with a child biologically related to one or other of the men. John Harris, 50, is the biological father of one of the children, whilst his civil partner, Daryl Lee, 41, provided sperm for the other two.
The children are due to be born between January and July next year.
“While it is unorthodox to have three surrogates at the same time, we couldn’t turn down what could be our only chance to have the big family we’d always dreamed of,” Mr Lee told a newspaper.
When the children are born, the three women involved will be recognised legally as their mothers but it is expected that the homosexual couple will become their legal parents through a parental order or adoption, soon after their birth.
In 2010, 83 babies were born through surrogacy arrangements but that number is expected to rise to 200 this year, according to reports.
Commenting on the news, Andrea Williams said:
“We are fast moving into a new era of ‘designer’ families which trample on God’s pattern and the natural order. This is a dangerous and regressive step. These are untested arrangements. Talk of the desires and rights of adults dominates. Consideration of the welfare and best interests of children is ignored. It is they who will bear the biggest consequences.”
