The Coalition Government has announced plans to introduce full homosexual ‘marriage’ before 2015, with the strong personal backing of Prime Minister David Cameron. Lynne Featherstone, the equalities minister and Liberal Democrat MP, has announced plans for a ‘consultation’ to be launched next March which is to be followed by a change in the law.

A landmark legal case in Florida has set a worrying precedent for babies born with disabilities. A court ruled that Rodolfo Santana and Ana Mejia should receive $4.5m after the parents ‘missed the chance’ to abort their disabled son.

A senior Catholic clergyman has voiced strong opposition to the Scottish Government’s proposals to introduce homosexual ‘marriage’. Bishop Tartaglia, of the diocese of Paisley, argued that should the Government allow for homosexual ‘marriage’, it would not deserve the trust of the Scottish people. He made the comments as part of his response to the Government’s consultation on the issue, which was launched last week.

Controversial measures that would have given unmarried couples the same rights as married couples have now been rejected. The proposals from the Law Commission, which were first published in 2009, would have given inheritance rights to unmarried couples who had been living together for at least two years, and would have led to couples who had cohabited for 5 years or more being treated in the same way as married couples.

Advice UK, the largest support network for free advice centres in the UK, has pushed out a Christian debt counselling charity from its membership for offering to pray with clients suffering from debt problems.

Researchers behind a new study on abortion have discovered that women who have abortions experience an 81% increase in the risk of mental health problems. The ground breaking paper also found that almost 10% of all mental health problems are shown to be directly linked to abortion.

Figures released by a selection of NHS foundation trusts have shown that almost 1,000 under-16s in their care have been diagnosed with venereal diseases such as herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhoea in the past three years.

Plans to offer women independent counselling before they commit to having an abortion are to be announced by the Department of Health. The move comes ahead of a commons vote next week on an amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill that would ensure that women considering an abortion would be guaranteed access to independent information from someone who had no vested financial interest in the outcome of their decision.
